Hand 1 — September 2017: “A Poor Play by Me, Gone Right”

The course opens with one of Garrett’s first Live at the Bike streams — a $50/$100/$200 structure, a one-big-blind ante, and Upswing co-founder Ryan Fee calling his middle-position open with jack-ten offsuit “purely for stream-invite EV”. The flop is 5-4-9, a board Garrett explains is much better for the in-position caller; the turn brings an 84%-pot barrel of $2,800, and Garrett — holding an ace-high hand with a backdoor draw that is, in his own words, “a very clear fold” — calls it off and gets shown the good news.

Why open a 35-hour course with a hand you won by playing badly? Because this is the point of the whole thing. Garrett walks through what actually swayed him — hundreds of hours with Ryan, the “empty the clip” metagame read, the chips going in — and then grades it: he would not make that call today, and it “was very 2017 of me”. You also get the first appearance of his Continue Threshold idea (“check, don’t fold” rather than “check-call”) and a short lesson on why a $50/$100/$200 structure with this ante configuration makes everyone slightly less incentivized to get involved. Hand 7 — The 4-Bet War vs Art That Sent Garrett Into the Solver

March 2018, $100/$200 with a $200 ante, about 700 big blinds deep. Garrett opens to $600 from the cutoff, Art 3-bets to $3,000 from the small blind, Garrett 4-bets to $9,000, Art calls. The hand went viral at the time; the Part 1 video is 25 minutes and the file is 978 MB, the biggest single lesson in the first three modules.

Then the river: Art check-raises with ace-king, Garrett folds, and the camera catches him muttering that Art “has nineteen queens”. Garrett’s verdict on himself is the most honest passage in the course — the attitude “played a role in my decision-making”, he was “rightfully punished”, he did not want to be “this guy” at the table. That embarrassment is what started the thousands of hours of Pio study through COVID that built the rest of the course. The ironic punchline arrives in Part 2: when he finally ran the sim years later, Art’s river check-raise with ace-king is not solver-approved either. The course is called Destroy Live Cash, but the honesty about his own leaks is the reason the exploit lessons are credible.

Hand 18 — Folding the Second Nuts: When Reads Beat Theory

October 2019, a $25/$50/$100 game with a $50 ante, single-raised pot against Andy — Garrett’s most frequent opponent in the course and the subject of the famous hand 11.1 QQ bluff. Andy opens the hijack to $300, Garrett defends the third blind with ten-seven offsuit (a hand he says is normally a fold, and fine only with strong reads). Flop 9-8-2, a $300 c-bet, call. The turn gives Garrett the second nuts. Andy bets $475 into $1,300; Garrett raises to about $2,500; Andy re-raises to nearly $7,900. Garrett shrugs, and folds the second nuts.

The lesson is not “fold big hands to aggression”. It is the opposite, and Garrett is careful about it: near the top of your range you should basically never fold unless the read is “super, super sick”, and his read here came from hundreds, sometimes thousands of hours of streamed hands against one man — not from a gold chain and one orbit. He tells the story of students who make egregious folds against a “fish” they have played for an hour, and the rule he gives them: poker is a game of information, and until you have lots of it, you stick to a plan that leans on GTO. This is the evidence-strength question of the four-question process in action, and it is why the course never turns into “trust your gut”. Garrett does not run a fresh sim per hand — he explains in the Part 2 of hand 1 that this is “wildly inefficient”. He studies from five or six standard configurations (single-raised, 3-bet and 4-bet pots, always with a one-big-blind ante, straddles treated as the big blind) and maps each real hand onto the closest one. That is the same study method he recommends to you, and it is why the solver sections stay short (most are 15–30 minutes) and why you can follow them with zero prior solver time.
