How to find pure river bluffs: Nachos Poker video recap on picking air hands by suit (2026)

How to Find Pure River Bluffs: Nachos Poker Video (2026)

Video Blog · Nachos Poker · Updated October 2026

Pure river bluffs are not just “the worst hands in your range.” In Nachos Poker’s lesson, the best ones are the air hands whose suit blocks the fewest folds.

You are out of position in a 3-bet pot as the preflop raiser, the river is dealt and you have nothing. This 2026 video recap shows the one question he uses to pick the pure river bluffs worth a bet.

🏆 Quick verdict

Watch this if you play 3-bet pots out of position and want a repeatable way to choose pure river bluffs. The video shows the idea: sort your air hands by suit, because the suit shows which of your opponent’s calling hands you block. It is a trend from a small sample, not a chart to memorise.

The idea

The One Question That Finds Pure River Bluffs

Nachos Poker looks at the average river betting frequency of air hands across four river paths and five boards, then splits every result by suit. Our reading of what he finds: before you bet an unmade hand, ask what this card does to your opponent’s range.

01

It blocks the folds

A club in your hand removes club combinations that kept calling the flop and turn and would fold on the river. That is the last thing a bluff wants.

02

It blocks value, not folds

Some hands block the opponent’s value hands and leave the folds alone. In his example that is exactly where a bluff earns its money.

03

It blocks almost nothing

Hearts and diamonds barely touch the hands that kept calling, so those suits bluff the most in the column he reads.

04

Pairs and draws do the calling

On a board like Queen-10-7 the defender calls with pairs and straight draws, so suits matter less.

The same idea runs through his turn remarks, where flush draws bet more often because they carry more equity.

The scoreboard

The Suit Ladder: Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, Clubs

In the two-flush-draw column he reads out, the river betting frequency of air hands falls into three bands.

Inside the lesson

On the flop, about half of the spades in his defender’s air range fold, while clubs are still in there essentially every time. The river bluffs follow from that.

He is careful with his own table. The frequencies are an average over five textures, not exact science, and the suit is only a filter: some clubs block value hands and still do a decent job as bluffs.

Hand selection

Four Hands the Lesson Walks Through

Hand 01

Queen-Jack

On the board he shows, Queen-Jack is a very decent bluff even with clubs or spades, because it blocks a reasonable amount of value.

Hand 02

King-Queen

On the last board he shows, King-Queen is often a check. It is only king-high, and checking is highly valued there.

Hand 03

King-Jack

King-Jack in hearts or diamonds shows up as a bluff at some frequency, while the club versions are not bluffed as often.

Hand 04

Weaker than king-high

With a hand weaker than king-high, he says checking is worth about zero while bluffing is clearly profitable.

He also compares the same kind of hand across suits and the EV gap is measurable in big blinds. The exact numbers are in the full video.

The bigger picture

Why Balance Is Not the Goal

He treats defence within about five percentage points either side of balanced as roughly balanced. On many boards that means there is no obvious case to overbluff.

So the job is not to bluff more. It is to pick the bluffs that actually generate EV. That is where choosing pure river bluffs by suit pays off. For the wider theory of bluff selection, read our post on why you’re bluffing the wrong hands.

Your turn

The 4-Minute Drill: Try It Yourself

Our four-step version of the method, built from what the lesson shows. Run it on one board family at a time.

01

Filter to air

Keep only the unmade hands.

02

Split by suit

Group them by suit and read the river bet frequency for each.

03

Trace the defender

Filter the opponent’s range by the same suits on the flop and the turn. See which suits keep calling.

04

Pick the bluffs

Keep the hands whose suit blocks the fewest folds, and check the ones with showdown value.

What the Short Leaves Out

This is a short recap of a lesson that runs over 21 minutes, built exclusively from the transcribed lesson, nothing invented. Treat it accordingly.

  • The averages come from five boards, a small sample that leans toward straight-draw-heavy textures.
  • The author calls the frequencies a rough model that shows trends, not exact science.
  • The transcript is speech-to-text, so numbers that came out garbled are left out here.

FAQ

Pure River Bluffs FAQ

What are pure river bluffs?

Hands with no made hand to show down that you bet on the river anyway. In this lesson, Nachos Poker studies air hands and compares how often each suit bets.

Does the suit of my hand matter for a river bluff?

In his data, yes. In the two-flush-draw column, hearts and diamonds bluff almost always, spades slightly below medium and clubs at a low frequency. It is an average, not an exact rule.

Why does a club hurt a river bluff in his example?

The opponent’s continuing hands on the flop and turn were heavy in clubs. Holding a club on the river blocks hands that would fold.

Do suits always matter?

No. On a board like Queen-10-7 the defender calls with pairs and straight draws, so suits matter less.
