The Line That Pays Your Rent
Saulo splits his output into three colours, and this is the one that builds the foundation of a win rate. Blue Line is fish exploits. Green Line is theory heuristics. Red Line is reg exploits — the extra big blinds on top. If you had to buy one of the three, and you play anywhere below high stakes, this is the one. The database behind it
The exploits are built from a Hand2Note research database holding over 250 million hands played online in recent years across every major platform — PokerStars, GG Poker, iPoker, 888, WPN and others. Every adjustment starts with the numbers from that pool, gets modelled through node locking, and only then becomes an instruction. You are not being told what Saulo thinks fish do. You are being shown what a quarter of a billion hands say they do.
Saulo Costa Dose of Blue Line — Why Fish Are Exploitable At All
The opening session establishes the two premises that govern every execution that follows: against recreational players you overcall in almost every spot and you overbluff heavily, especially in small pots. Simple to say. The entire library exists to tell you where, by how much and — just as importantly — where not to.
The number that explains everything
The aggregate fish profile sits at roughly 41 VPIP / 16 PFR. When they bet the river, their range contains about 39% bluffs. For reference: betting half pot — by far the size fish use most — requires around 25% bluffs to be balanced. Even a 2x pot overbet only requires about 40%.
So the average fish arrives at the river with an overbluffing rate appropriate for a massive overbet, while betting half pot. And the cause is not river madness — it is preflop. Once you enter 40% of hands, it is arithmetically impossible not to overbluff later, because your range is stuffed with hands that can never be value. That single chain of logic is why fish exploitation works at all, and why it does not stop working when they improve slightly.

Not All Fish Are The Same Fish
The library uses Metagame’s own internal taxonomy rather than treating every recreational player as one blob, and this is where it separates from generic “how to beat fish” content.
The profiles
Whales sit at 50+ VPIP. Tight fish sit far below the average. Very aggressive fish bluff noticeably more than the standard profile. And then there is the one Saulo flags as genuinely requiring a different approach: the passive fish with a PFR of 10 or lower — the player who essentially never raises, limps constantly and cold calls everything. Against that profile specifically, the standard fish gameplan needs adjusting, and the library says so instead of pretending one plan fits all.
Game selection, quantified
One Q&A session does something almost nobody publishes: it compares the composition of the fish population across different poker sites. What percentage of recreational players on each site are actual whales versus tight fish — measured, not guessed. If you have ever wondered whether your site choice is costing you money before a single hand is dealt, that session answers it with numbers.
Live fish versus online fish — the session nobody else could make
Hand2Note built a live poker database by converting roughly 700,000 hands from publicly available streams — broadcasts where hole cards are visible — into real hand histories. For the first time there is actual data on the live player pool, and DBL#78 uses it.
The finding: live fish are substantially more passive than online fish across every street, bluff the river noticeably less, and fold more. The reason is structural — around 75% of the hands live fish play postflop are multiway. If you move between live and online games and carry the same bluffcatching thresholds into both, this session alone changes how you play.
Do fish change as you move up?
DBL#83 compares low, mid and high stakes fish directly. The answer is a mild yes: PFR and 3-bet frequency climb steadily as stakes rise, cold calling falls at every position, and big blind defence tightens slightly. But the core does not change — they remain completely positionally unaware, defending the same range regardless of who opened. Good news if you are moving up: your fish gameplan travels with you.
